Tie can’t sour Soweto’s sweet victory
SOWETO, South Africa – Here in the township South Africa once tried to forget, they sang as the sun fell on Friday. A cool late breeze blew and if you listened close you could hear the buzz of the vuvuzela from Soccer City just a couple miles away. Hope danced cheap nfl jerseys in the leaves. Could anyone believe it? The World Cup had come to Soweto. For years they had watched Soccer City rise from the dusty plain just off the township’s edge knowing this day would come and yet with it now here it hardly seemed true. Soweto. Dirty Soweto. Yet there was Bafana player Spihiwe Tshabalala, born just down the road, a player for Soweto’s own Keizer Chiefs scoring the first goal of this World Cup.
A great roar rose inside the park. Out in the distance, Orlando Stadium, the Chiefs’ home field, glistened in the twilight and everything suddenly seemed possible. They twirled flags and they waved their own vuvuzela horns.
Then they sang.
The song was “Shosholoza,” the haunting ballad hummed by generations of South Africa’s oppressed workers.

There was quiet as Zuma talked about Mandela, whose great granddaughter had been killed in a car accident the night before. Eyes stared at the ground.
A few minutes later, as the Mexican national anthem played, another “shushhhhhh” trickled through the crowd. “Respect the national anthem,” one man hissed. They did.
And when South Africa’s anthem, taken from the songs of its four greatest ethnic groups, played, they sang too.
Soweto was alive. None more so than about an hour later when Tshabalala flicked his leg at the ball, curling a perfect shot just under the crossbar to give South Africa its 1-0 lead. As afternoon turned to evening and darkness began to fill the park the possibility of the unimaginable began to take hold. Could Bafana Bafana, long scored as a joke of a soccer team in recent international play, really win? Could it beat mighty Mexico? The previous night, on the radio, a man was saying that four decades ago Martin Luther King predicted the idea of Barack Obama becoming president of the United States and if Obama could be president of the U.S. then surely Bafana Bafana could win the World Cup.
It didn’t matter that the logic made little sense. At this moment, anything seemed possible. Across the street from the park someone drove an old Volkswagon CTI onto the sidewalk, just in front of a neighborhood shebeen, or bar, opened his car doors and blasted music from the stereo. People milled all about, hoping, dreaming, willing to believe that something really, really good was about to come to Soweto.
Then Mexico scored.
Reality didn’t hit in the instant this happened. The vuvuzelas still played. The flags still twirled. Someone continued to sing. But slowly word moved through the crowd and disbelieving faces turned toward the screen to see the Mexican players celebrating. From afar, it was as if a set of big stadium lights had been turned off; joy slowly sinked into silence. The television announcer’s voice could suddenly be heard on the loudspeakers installed around the park’s perimeter.

RUSTENBURG, South Africa – A noted British hooligan was detained by police at the airport in Johannesburg Friday and sent home later that day.
Apparently it was tougher to get into the country than into Royal Bafokeng Stadium Saturday when the U.S. met England in a Group C World Cup match.
Despite the presence of football jersey Vice President Joe Biden, it’s fair to say security at the stadium was not as tough as Americans have grown to expect at some sporting events in the United States. Call it tight but not impenetrable.
Several police perimeters were set up around the stadium, some as far as 2 1/2 miles away – but those were used mainly to stop vehicles and direct them to far off park-and-rides locations.
Three more police checkpoints closer to the stadium were filled with several officers, but cars were not heavily checked. In fact, it was possible to drive all the way into the final perimeter.
Security – a concern at all major worldwide sporting events since 9/11 – has been an issue for this World Cup since it was awarded to South Africa six years ago. Teams, journalists and fans have found out why as numerous muggings and robberies have marked the opening days.
On Saturday, the Uruguayan soccer association said its executive board president, Ernesto Rodriguez Altez, had more than $4,000 taken from the safe in his Cape Town hotel room, and TV New Zealand’s correspondent and cameraman were robbed of all their equipment at the FIFA-approved Sparkling Waters hotel in Rustenburg, foreign editor Max Hayton said. Thieves smashed their hotel room door when the two were out to dinner, he said. The estimated loss was $100,000.
South African authorities are attempting to maintain peace, moving quickly when needed. On Saturday, a court – one of 56 set up specifically to handle World Cup issues – sentenced three thieves to a total of new jersey nfl 34 years in prison for robbing foreign journalists.

Falcons waive 2 players after preseason win

Polian: Problems with umpire are solvable
INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Colts president Bill Polian understands why the NFL decided to move its umpires into a safer location. Hey, he even voted for it.
After watching his franchise quarterback, Peyton Manning(notes), get called twice for illegal snaps and become visibly frustrated with the pace of Thursday night’s preseason game, Polian said Saturday the solution may be only some minor tweaks.
“I don’t think there are many (problems with it). I think they are mechanical in nature,” he said during a rare in-season news conference. “I don’t think we’ll see the full import of nfl jerseys it until we get well into the regular season and certainly get a full season’s worth of work. My concerns right now are simply mechanical and very easily solvable.”
The architect of four Super Bowl teams in Buffalo and two in Indy put aside his sometimes fiery demeanor in an effort to downplay an issue debated at great length on Friday’s local sports talk shows.
Polian has never been afraid to speak his mind. He helped lobby for a rules change about defensive contact with receivers after a playoff loss to New England and has used his weekly radio show to critique Indianapolis’ offensive line and explain why the Colts decided to pull their starters when they were 14-0.
Now Polian finds himself playing a different role—mediator and spokesman for the competition committee, which approved the position switch.
“It was the intent of the committee and the officiating department that we make sure that we created a situation that was as safe as possible for these guys (umpires),” Polian said. “It reached the point where the league office thought that the physical danger out there and the safety of discount nfl jerseys the umpire was becoming an issue, so we changed his position. We recognized that there would be, A, mechanical issues, and B, issues with respect to certain penalties that might or might not be called based upon the new position.”

After a so-so effort in his first preseason game, Seattle Seahawks veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck(notes) quelled growing talk of a potential quarterback controversy with his play against Green Bay.
In two quarters of work, Hasselbeck completed 11 of 15 passes for 127 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Deion Branch(notes). He finished with an impressive, 120.7 passer rating. And Hasselbeck’s numbers would have been even better if not for a couple uncharacteristic drops by tight end John Carlson(notes).
In just three series of nfl jerseys work against Tennessee the week before, Hasselbeck finished 4 of 10 for 26 yards and 47.9 passer rating.
So what was the difference for Hasselbeck?
“Probably just a little bit more focus and intensity,” he said. “And even though it’s a preseason game, giving it the respect that it’s due. Holding it in high regard and realizing that every opportunity you get to go out and play at Qwest with the jersey and with the helmet, you have to take advantage of the opportunity.”
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was pleased to see his starting quarterback get back on track.

On the other end of the spectrum, backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst(notes) came back down to earth after throwing for 214 yards and two touchdowns in his first game as a Seahawk.
Whitehurst finished 9 or 20 for 73 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions playing with the second unit.
Even with the poor performance, Carroll continues to have confidence in Whitehurst.
“He looks good out there playing, he looks like our brand of football,” Carroll said. “I don’t have any question about that.”

• Offensive tackle Russell Okung(notes), drafted No. 6 overall and paid a maximum $58 million contract to be the team’s left tackle of the future after Walter Jones(notes) retired, injured his right ankle on the first series of the game against Green Bay.
Okung is expected to miss at least two weeks with a high ankle sprain. The Seahawks consider him day-to-day, though he’s unlikely to play in Detroit Lions jersey the preseason considering the lengthy recovery time from the injury is typically closer to one month.
Okung reported to camp eight days late and was dinged up in Seattle’s first exhibition game against Tennessee. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said X-rays on Okung’s ankle came back negative and he is likely to miss 2-4 weeks.

(Mansfield) Wrotto played the whole game just about. We’ll see how we did and all. That’s a big loss if he can’t come back. We put a lot of time and effort in getting this guy right. He’s done everything we can ask of him, and we’ll see how it is and how long it’s going to take.”
• Rookie safety Earl Thomas(notes) continued to struggle in making the jump to the NFL. In Green Bay’s first drive of the game, Thomas bit hard on quarterback Aaron Rodgers’(notes) play-action fake and was beaten over the top of the defense by receiver Greg Jennings(notes) for a 56-yard gain.

On Green Bay’s second drive of the game, Thomas and veteran Lawyer Milloy(notes) appeared to get crossed up, with both players covering the middle of the defense, leaving tight end Jermichael Finley(notes) wide open in the end zone for a 12-yard score.
